Original AFL Decals

The above logo was redrawn by Ange Coniglio in 1999. Below are logos scanned from original material, with notes about their sources. In 1959, the first Commissioner of the AFL, Joe Foss, commissioned a friend of New York Titans owner Harry Wismer to design the original AFL logo.

AFL logo on a 1960 Fleer football decal card. In addition to player cards numbered #1 through #132, the set contained nine "1960 Fleer AFL Team Decals" cards numbered #1 through #9. The first decal card was the AFL logo, in one of its earliest versions. Soon after, the outer blue circle was added.
Although some printers may have rendered the logo or parts of it in shades of grey, note that the league's official colors were RED WHITE AND BLUE.

Brands on the AFL's Spalding J5-V football. This ball was used in the AFL from 1960 through 1969, and in January 1970: by the Chiefs in the 4th World Championship Game; and in the last AFL All-Star game.
On the left is the brand from an early "Cushion Control" model football: note the two stars inside the inner oval and the thinner letter "A". The logo on the right was on a ball used in 1969.

This logo is a crude version used by the Original Eight teams to celebrate the AFL's Silver Anniverary in 1984.	Logo on Kansas City Chiefs' jersey patch commemorating Lamar Hunt, 2007. The patch is now a permanent part of the team's uniform.	Logo on one side of an AFL Fan ring, 2008.
Apparently the 1984 logo was NFL-influenced: the crude eagle and all-wrong ball are blue instead of red, and the "A" is red and white instead of blue and white! This was evidently to justify the NFL's blunder in making the AFC's "A" red instead of blue, as it should be.

None of the Original Eight used the AFL logo in their 50th Anniversary logos.
The 'official' logo was used on 'Legacy' throwback gear.
